Exit of Harry Brook From IPL 2025.
England’s vice-captain Harry Brook has pulled out from the entire IPL 2025 season just a few days before the tournament began in a shocking turn of events. Such a sudden change has left the Delhi capitals looking for a replacement as Brook would have been a critical element in their batting. This is something that was not expected by the Delhi Capitals just before the beginning of this huge tournament where money is being spent like water upon players across countries.

The franchise owner of Delhi Capitals looked really angry about this decision of Harry Brook, and as per reports, Delhi Capital has also claimed that they are not going to bid for Harry Brook in the future even if he hits a double century in T20 cricket in the future, this means like a big statement from a franchise of IPL (Delhi Capitals). For this year’s IPL, Delhi Capitals purchased him for INR 6.25 crores during the mega auction of IPL 2025 held in Saudi Arabia, now it started seeming like a big loss as Delhi do not have much options to spend this money on good players.
Former England captain Nasser Hussain has also revealed his views on why Brook opted out, while experts have also weighed in on who will replace the batter in the Delhi Capitals lineup. So let’s have a look at both.
Why did Harry Brook withdraw himself from the IPL 2025?
Delhi Capitals purchased Brook for a whopping INR 6.25 crore, so the reasons for his pull out of IPL 2025 have raised several eyebrows. Workload management and possible leadership roles might have factored into this move, feels Nasser Hussain.
With a full international schedule lined up for Brook — comprising key Test series against both India and Australia — Hussain suggests the Test captaincy may have played a part in Brook’s deliberations. More rested still, given that Jos Buttler is standing down as England’s white-ball captain and Brook is apparently in the mix to take the post, which may have been a factor in his absence.
“I find it could be a sign (to withdraw from IPL 2025). Rob Key might have told him, ‘You’ve had a lot to deal with. We may want you to captain’. Who knows? He’s got a lot on his plate, a huge nine months ahead of him — both a Test series at home and then the Ashes away — and he’s had a fair chunk of bad news.” Hussain told Sky Sports.
Notably, he previously pulled out of IPL 2024 for personal family reasons, and now it seems that international commitments have taken priority again. He further added, “Maybe he thinks that right, I’m just going to focus on Test match cricket. “I think only Rob Key and Harry Brook know the full picture.”
The England and The Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have sent an official communication to the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the BBCI regarding Brook’s decision, which was passed on to Delhi Capitals. Brook explained on social media that he required time to refresh and recover from the arduous calendar of cricket.
What This Means for Harry Brook’s Future in IPL: Exit of Harry Brook From IPL 2025
However, it has led to speculations about Brook’s IPL future as now, in the last 2 seasons, he failed to participate. Under the new rules of the I.P.L., he might receive a two-year ban from the tournament. It is yet to be seen how the BCCI will tackle the situation, but his absence has put Delhi Capitals in a tough spot. In short, we can say that Harry Brook is probably not going to be featured in any upcoming IPL seasons.
Two Potential Replacements of Harry Brook for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025
Delhi Capitals will now have to look for a solid overseas replacement to strengthen their middle order with Brook being ruled out. Here are three possible replacements who could take over:
Daryl Mitchell
Daryl Mitchell, the New Zealand all-rounder, seems a hot favourite to fill Brook’s vacuum. Having a batter who can play anywhere in the batting order and operate under pressure adds value to the team. Mitchell proved consistent in T20Is in 2024:
Criterion | Data |
Innings | 9 |
Runs | 274 |
Average | 39.14 |
Strike Rate | 158.38 |
Mitchell also impressed during IPL 2024 playing for Chennai Super Kings with the bat, as he scored 318 runs in 13 innings at an average of 28.90 and strike rate of 142.60. His ability to contribute with the ball makes him an even more attractive potential replacement.

Ben Duckett
The other, England’s Ben Duckett, has been in incredible touch across formats. He is a good player of spin, Duckett would offer Delhi Capitals explosive starts and a boost to their middle-order if they get him signed –an important quality for the I.P.L. Duckett played an important part in England’s Champions Trophy 2025 campaign and had an impressive tournament record:
Criterion | Data |
Innings | 3 |
Runs | 227 |
Average | 75.66 |
Strike Rate | 108.61 |
Duckett has also been around T20 cricket:
Criterion | Data |
Innings | 198 |
Runs | 5159 |
Average | 30.89 |
Strike Rate | 140.38 |
